STUDSAT Project at NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore

A picosatellite, named STUDSAT, was launched in July 2010 from Sriharikota aboard the PSLVC-15 along with ISRO satellite named CARTOSAT 2B. It was placed into the orbit of 630 km above the earth and was successfully tracked by the ground station - Nitte Amateur Satellite Tracking Centre (NASTRAC) at NMIT. This very unique work was done by a consortium of seven engineering colleges from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh with NMIT as the lead centre, under much-needed guidance from ISRO. NMIT is one of the Top 10 engineering colleges in Bangalore, Karnataka.

NMIT which is one of the best engineering colleges in Bangalore, constantly takes up and encourages initiatives similar to STUDSAT keeping in mind the interests of students and teachers.

How did the project help and impact the students?

  • Team got an opportunity to work on a project that is multidisciplinary in nature.
  • Interaction with ISRO scientists on specifications document, design document, and test results were enriching and enduring.
  • Students in the team could understand and appreciate what it takes to reach team goals in a project of this kind.
  • Team got an opportunity to work on the design and development of payload for a satellite
  •  Design included hardware design, software design, and mechanical design.
  • Team got an opportunity to design and develop a ground station. The nature of activities was different compared to  designing and building satellite
  • Many mini projects and main projects (UG, PG) have been carried out
  • Several good papers have been published and a Patent was received for NASTRAC
