An Engineer who Engineered India’s Cricket Firmament
Anil Kumble, who reached the peak as a Cricketer – Coach – Commentator, is an inspiration to cricket buddies the world over. For students doing engineering in Bangalore, Anil Kumble’s name should sound special and close to the heart particularly for two reasons among many. First is that Kumble is basically a mechanical engineer from Bangalore, and second the Anil Kumble circle at the entrance to M G Road, Bangalore was named after him coinciding the epoch, 10 wickets haul in a Test innings against Pakistan in 2005.
Anil
Kumble played for India for a good 18 years in all cricket formats. He is the
third-highest test wicket-takers in the world with 619 scalps in his kitty.
True to his grit and determination, in 2002, he kept bowling with bandages for
broken jaws on and stayed put in that condition for 14 hours! A Padmashri awardee, Kumble is a man of
multi-interests in life. He is an acknowledged wildlife photographer. His
Instagram page is the best place to look for many rarest of wildlife images.
Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, one of the best engineering colleges in Bangalore, acknowledges the services of this ‘son of the soil’ in several other
areas other than cricket. Kumble can be
the role model to our budding engineers when it comes to self-employment initiatives and start-up
enterprises. Being a sports entrepreneur, Kumble stands out as inspiration
again. Succeeding in a chosen field and
earning lots of money is just one thing but monetizing that advantage in
business terms and creating space for others is yet another. Kumble made the best
of his academics, Cricket, Coaching, and now training the young buddies for
passion and career. Inducted to the ICC Hall of Fame, Anil Kumble is someone who
made India proud for reasons more than one.
Let us hail and wish him for all his contribution to the world of
cricket in particular and for being an icon of success for the generation to replicate him.
