Tough times don’s last, so are Corona times!

‘What lies before us, what lies behind us are tiny matters when compared to what lies within us’    - Oliver Holmes Wendall The pandemic around us and multiple levels of fear injected into us has unnerved us all, to say the least. What scares us beyond a sensible limit is the way people around us interpret it and talk about it with no holds barred. The electronic media, with multiple channels, has spread the scare worse than the virus itself!  There is so much bombardment and exaggeration just to score a point or a little mileage over the next door neighbour. They seem to go one up to say, ‘I told you so’, ‘I was the first to say so’ and so on.  Well, in the end, what is it we are getting at?  Why are we doing what we are doing? If the ‘business’ is to give the news that would be so much better. Why then the channels bend backwards to give the ‘views’? Well this kind of bombardment or exaggeration can be accepted as part of the bigger system. We cannot really stop the other but we

‘Coursera’ on its course to NMIT Bangalore…

Image
‘Coursera’ is said to be one of the biggest platforms for online learning, knowledge up-gradation, and student competency building in chosen domains. It is America’s massive open online education dispenser. Two of computer science professors of Stanford University namely Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller made it all possible in the year 2012. Today Coursera is a name to reckon with more than 150 university alliances across the world  and 7000 courses on offer online. Many leading Universities have welcomed ‘Coursera’ offered courses to their campus in their own differentiated and unique way.    In the 9th virtual annual conference held between April 19-21, 2021, Coursera’s, top the ranking committee appreciated the efforts of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore for including a   few topical courses among the elective courses of the Institute. NMIT came in for special mention and appreciation in the hands of three distinguished academicians namely Mr. Raghav Gupta, MD of In

‘You Believe, You achieve’

‘Doubt can stop you in your tracks; it can drain your desire,                                          Believing on the other hand can set your world afire’ Yes, dear friends, we often come across a failure here, a disappointment there, a loss of hope somewhere, a lack of support out there… do these things often well up in your mind and keep you from doing what you must? If your answer is YES, you ought to read the lines that follow. 99% of your inspiration can come to naught with one 1% of desperation! It is therefore your personal responsibility to keep your spirits high more often than usual.   The kind of books that we read, people we socialize with, movies that we see,   news that bombards us day in and day out can all dampen our spirit and will. Is there a way out to insulate ourselves from these external instigators? There may not be any readymade solution but at the same time, there is no problem under the Sun has no solution. Leo Tols

STUDSAT Project at NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Bangalore

Image
A  picosatellite, named STUDSAT, was launched in July 2010 from Sriharikota aboard the PSLVC-15 along with ISRO satellite named CARTOSAT 2B. It was placed into the orbit of 630 km above the earth and was successfully tracked by the ground station - Nitte Amateur Satellite Tracking Centre (NASTRAC) at NMIT. This very unique work was done by a consortium of seven engineering colleges from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh with NMIT as the lead centre , under much-needed guidance from ISRO. NMIT is one of the  Top 10 engineering colleges in Bangalore, Karnataka. NMIT which is one of the best engineering colleges in Bangalore , constantly takes up and encourages initiatives similar to STUDSAT keeping in mind the interests of students and teachers. How did the project help and impact the students? Team got an opportunity to work on a project that is multidisciplinary in nature. Interaction with ISRO scientists on specifications document, design document, and test results were enriching and en

Total implementation of ‘Outcome Based Evaluation’: Need of the hour

Image
A study on employability by NASSCOM in 2017, shows that only 4.22% of engineering graduates are employable in product-based companies and that is 17% in service industries.   Some of the reasons attributed for such a dismal level of absorption are: Students have to make do without of date curriculum Graduates lack   communication/soft Skills Institutions mostly follow the traditional method of teaching The evaluation  system has not been made robust enough to find out the knowledge level of the students Given the above, Outcome Based Education (OBE) in Engineering is a need of the hour. Even though the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) with the support of ABET has listed 12 Graduate Attributes in the year 2013, most of the Indian Institutions are yet to move to the OBE system in full scale.   It is gratifying to note that our government is motivating the Institutions to get their programs accredited by National Board of Accreditation and is willing to help the institutions to tak

At NMIT, Communication ability is the Priority!

Image
It is important that every one of us irrespective of positions and dispositions needs to hone this essential skill every day and in every way. No one can ever say that he knows enough of it and that he does not need more! You may be quite good at communication with others but you do not know the dynamics involved in ’total communication’. Your success in communication, therefore, hinges on the listeners (counterparties), situation, and your own ‘self’ at that point in time. Communication is situational and would have to be multi-faceted and multi-dimensional. Engineering grads by virtue of merit often find themselves in high positions. However, communication ability is found to be lacking even among them. Keeping this in mind NMIT placement team has taken aggressive steps for enhancing linguistic and other abilities on a war footing to help students chase dream jobs into reality. The subject of communication is so vast that half of the paper produced in this world would have in
