Her aim was high and above. That one ‘spark’ showed her the way...



The momentous touching down of the NASA Perseverance rover on the surface of Mars on February 18, 2021, was yet another feat for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. That seven-minute blazing plunge made it all difference. For the team that made it possible it was a matter of seven months, 300 million mile journey towards the goal which their every heartbeat must have prayed for fruition. Indian-American Dr. Swati Mohan who spearheaded the development of attitude control and the landing system for the rover shared a major part of this glory. Dr. Swathi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University and completed her MS and Ph.D. from MIT in Aeronautics/Astronautics. It is a matter of pride that Dr. Swathi Mohan is an alumnus of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, which is one of the best engineering colleges in Bangalore.  

It is interesting to note that Swati while watching the movie ‘Star trek’ at the age of 9, got the first spark of curiosity. That was the time it seems she wanted to do things of that kind and many more. NMIT Bengaluru, one of the top engineering colleges in Karnataka and India, known for imparting quality technical education helped Swati nurture her dreams and grow with time. Students graduated from Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), Bangalore, are serving in Defence, Research institutes, Laboratories and Multinational companies in India and around the globe, contributing to society. Graduates of NMIT are giving their valuable service to NASA (USA), ISRO, NASA, Indian ARMY, and Indian Air Force. The Department of Aeronautical Engineering of NMIT, Bangalore was established in the year 2011.

We at NMIT Bangalore, Nitte Education Trust Mangaluru and Nitte (Deemed to be University) Mangalore hail Dr. Swati Mohan for this breakthrough contribution to NASA and thereby to the cause of space science. May many more laurels come her way. May she continue to inspire hundreds and thousands of young aspiring engineers to scale high and achieve even more.
